You go outside for about 15 min. for recess and come back in. Ok this is just stupid. That is what many teens think as they get older. What they never knew though, is that in those 15 min. they are contributing to helping themselves learn better. In a study taken at Playworks in Oakland, CA 81% of their students showed improvment when excersising during the day. When excersising your brain can create new neurons and stimulate the process of "neurogenesis" which increases the growth of nerve cells, and is also the center of learning and memory. That is why there are so many commercials on Disney Channel with Michelle Obama encouraging at least 60 min. of activness each day.
Girls and fitness levels
When you look at a schools recess, girls are usually the ones standing or walking around while chatting. The only way they usually are active is during gym or on sports teams (if they are on one). Just standing there, does not help them academically. In another study it showed that when girls have a lower fitness level, it has a negative affect on their self-esteem and academic performance. So girls get out there and be active!
How After School Sports Affect Schoolwork According To Teens
Many teens get overwhelmed with school and sports. To find out if that was true I surveyed 24 of my class members. Out of the 24, 22 of them play sports and only 2 don't. All of those 22 teens, also said that the sports they play affect them in at least one way. Some said it was in a good way like it helps them make new friends, become responsible, etc. Others said that all of the time they spend commiting to the sport(s) makes them become rushed. An example from one was they get home at 3:20, eat until 3:45, do their homework until 4:30, go to practice from 5-7, and then come home and try to finish up all of the homework they have left! The days that they have a lot of homework or have to study for a test they will stay up as late as midnight! That means that their sleep is affected, and then their brain won't be all the way awake in the morning.
